Double faced (double cloth) fabrics resources
This list has been put together over the last two years by me and my students, as we searched for high-quality double-faced fabrics around the world. These fabrics are sometimes sold under the name double-faced or double cloth, but shop descriptions can be inconsistent. One of the most important distinctions is whether or not the fabric can be split (separated into two layers)—and many shops do not specify this.
Before purchasing yardage, we strongly recommend that you:
Contact the shop directly to confirm if the fabric can be split.
Order samples whenever possible, to test both weight and finish before investing in coat yardage.
Stick to solid, non-patterned fabrics, especially if this is your first coat. Patterns and checks require additional fabric and the challenge of matching motifs, which can slow down the learning process.
Avoid two-toned fabrics at the beginning. The lapel and collar area becomes a particular obstacle, since the face side of the lapel shows the inside color of the fabric. You’ll also need to decide whether the collar should match the lapel or the rest of the coat—either is possible, but it adds complexity you don’t need for your first project.

Remember: a double-faced coat is constructed from a single layer of fabric, so the weight should be substantial—450–500 grams per meter (and up) is ideal.
This list is meant to be a growing resource.
If you’re a shop owner who carries double-faced fabrics, please review the notes above and contact me—I’d love to include your store.
If you’re a student or maker who has discovered a new shop carrying this type of fabric, please let me know so we can keep this resource current and helpful for everyone.
UNITED STATES:
MOOD FABRICS (New York, Los Angeles, Miami) https://www.moodfabrics.com/
Mood Fabrics carry a lot of high-quality closeouts from high-end designers in wool, wool blend, or cashmere, but most of these are not marked online to indicate if they are splittable. I’ve worked with Trinity from Mood in Los Angeles, and she would be the best person to call and check which double faced fabrics are suitable for this project.
