I highly recommend this course! You learn so many different high-end finishes for button down shirts – multiple different style options for button plackets, sleeve plackets, cuffs, patch pockets, collar stands, collars, hems, side seam finishes, long sleeve and short sleeve. You will be armed with endless options for all of your different shirts! I think above all of that though is how wonderful the instructor is in sharing her knowledge and answering questions. This is hands-down one of my favorite sewing classes I’ve ever taken.

This is the perfect course for you if you want to learn to perfect your sewing in general, but also if you specifically love making shirts! You’ll be learning high-end techniques for shirt finishes — focusing on specific parts like collar, placket, etc, so very versatile — and have access to an expert on a weekly basis for any questions. Eira is incredibly kind and supportive, available at nearly all times to clarify certain things, and super open to feedback. Plus, you get access to two super well drafted shirt patterns that will elevate your sewing game! I’m wearing my Bowery shirt right now, actually.

Eira covers so many wonderful details in this course! I’ve sewn for decades and still learn so much from the many finishing details she demonstrates. I can’t wait to finish this course and put some of these to use in a finished shirt. Takes the basic shirt to the next level. She provides templates and does thorough demonstrations of each detail. By the end you will have a fantastic bank of examples of cuffs, plackets, collars, and all the things.

By far, one of the best courses out there! I’ve learned so much in the first two weeks and I’ve been sewing since I was a teenager. Eira provides the insights and the hints to take my skills to the next level. Each week is divided into areas of focus: plackets, sleeves and cuffs, collars etc. with Eira guiding us through well explained videos and timely answered questions. Not only will I gain these skills, but also the confidence to create my own nuances and design changes to my shirt projects.

Oh man, where to start!! This course was excellent! I have always loved sewing, and have a particular love of elegant construction methods, beautiful finishes, and tiny details. However, my taste in luxury finishes compared to my skill level for achieving them has always been a bit mismatched…until now! Eira’s class has boosted my sewing confidence 100% and I have loved geeking out about the clever construction methods taught. My samples have turned out so gorgeous I hardly recognize them as my own sewing. Truly a worthwhile investment!

Prepare to nerd out on shirt details! If you’re someone who loves and appreciates the finer details in a garment, you’ll love this course. The Delancy and Bowery patterns already have high quality finishes. You don’t need a serger for any part of the shirt; all the seams are tucked in. But the shirting course provides additional ways to create a cuff, collar, plackets, and hems that mimic the design details from high-end designers that can really elevate a garment.

Eira provides a really supportive learning environment. She is also really responsive to questions. Once you learn these techniques, you can apply them to other patterns as well. This course is a very worthy investment in my making practice.

This is a great course! I’ve learned and practiced new techniques that will take my sewing to the next level, for shirts but also for dresses. Eira is a generous and patient teacher.

If you ever want to elevate your sewing skills any course from the pattern line is an excellent choice. You will learn so much. Even if you are an experienced sewer, you will discover techniques that really add exclusiveness to your clothes. So, don’t doubt!

Taking any class from Eira will up your sewing skills no matter your level of experience, and her Shirting Techniques class is definitely one to take. I learned shirt making many years ago and have made many shirts, but there’s always room to learn more! This class introduced me to new techniques that I now love using on my shirts. Among my favorites: using templates to get perfectly-shaped pockets and sleeve plackets every time, multiple ways to beautifully finish shirt hems, and how to adapt a button-down shirt pattern to create a polo-style pullover shirt. Eira also teaches numerous techniques that are found only in high-end shirts, which adds a whole new level of polish to making your own. The class includes two excellent shirt patterns (the Delancey and the oversized Bowery), plus a series of templates that provide variations of collars, cuffs, pockets, plackets, and hems that can be used with the Delancey. Eira’s library of videos that demonstrate the many techniques are excellent, and the Zoom sessions and chat groups provide an opportunity to ask questions and share shirting inspiration and resources.

One of the best sewing courses I’ve taken – Eira has an amazing wealth of knowledge, is happy to share and is humble to ask for feedback and how she can make the course even better. To be honest, there’s so much technique and information that I haven’t seen a jump on my sewing quality at this level before (and I have been sewing for a while and taken a lot of courses). The finishing techniques are remarkable, love the new ways to finish plackets, different collars and cuffs. Additionally, her shirts are beautifully drafted and her samples are truly special. To finalise we have an online group that I feel that I never stop learning. Thoroughly recommend!

I really enjoyed this course! Eira was incredibly responsive and available to answer all questions—she even added new lessons based on our feedback, which was really appreciated. Her explanations in the YouTube videos are very clear and easy to follow.
What makes this course stand out is that Eira works in the fashion industry, so she shares professional techniques that aren’t usually accessible to the general public. I learned a lot about shirt construction and finishing methods that I wouldn’t have found elsewhere. Highly recommended for anyone serious about improving their shirt-making skills!

This was a great course, jam-packed with information and learning opportunities. I really enjoyed the component-based structure, with clear, professional videos and patterns for templates to practice & compare different techniques & options (so you can mix to create new variations of shirts you have). This really stands out from other courses I have seen in which you make a shirt in a linear fashion. The Zoom sessions and chat sessions provided lots of opportunity to ask questions and for the instructor and other group participants to share knowledge. Eira was super responsive to answering questions (some with new video lessons!) on how to do elements of shirts that were not previously covered. I highly recommend this course and look forward to enrolling in other courses offered by Eira / The Pattern Line.

I completely agree with all other 5 star reviewers, well worth the money. Eira’s professional videos, patterns and templates – you won’t get this anywhere else. Highly recommend, but beware: it will alter the way you look at shirts.

This is a wonderful course. The techniques are explained in a very straightforward and accessible way — Eira does everything in real time in her videos, no glazing over steps, you can literally sew along with her. The techniques themselves are readily applicable to any shirt pattern (you may have to adjust the pattern seam allowances or the pattern itself a little bit) and will give you a professional result without stress. Also, the techniques presented in this course are not something you can pick up from a home sewing pattern. The zoom sessions are an absolute joy, as Eira always finds interesting sewing and design details to discuss, and those sessions are also an opportunity to ask questions about not just what’s covered in the course tutorials but really anything you are trying to figure out in your sewing practice. The fact that this course is NOT focused on finishing a shirt puts the focus on learning the different techniques presented, which makes this a great course not just for beginners but also for those who have sewn shirts before and want to learn how to sew better.

I loved every minute of this course and learned so much! I consider myself an intermediate/advanced sewist and have made many collared button up shirts in my day but the countless luxury techniques I learned from Eira have totally elevated my sewing arsenal. Just one of the many highlights for me was by the end of the course, I have so much more confidence in my topstitching abilities! Also, it was so fun working through the samples and engaging with the other participants on the chat forums. I give the course 10/10 and very highly recommend it to anyone looking to sharpen and refine their sewing skills. I can’t wait to fill my wardrobe with Delancey and Bowery shirts. <3
